Keeping Bees in Ramsey County

Before you can keep bees in Ramsey County, Minnesota, you need a permit from Animal Control.  Some of the things the permit requires are:

  • A tall, non-climbable fence
  • Warning signs with letters at least 4 inches high
  • Permission from nearby neighbors

With the help of many others at the garden, we built the fence in 2008, and applied for (and received) the permit then, but it was too late in the year for bees to move in.  My sister painted some great signs to hang on the fence, and then we waited…and finally ordered bees in early 2009.

This is our garden’s first experience in community beekeeping.  I’m hoping that it will be a positive experience for everyone in the community, and that it will help people realize just how much fun bees are!
